Advent Family Devotions

This blog is designed for individuals and families to share in discussion around the lighting of the Advent wreath. This may happen at a dinner table or in the living room. The goal is to get everyone talking and reading scripture together. There will be 5 devotionals a week and a prepartion day for the following Sunday on Saturday. We (Pastor Matt & Pamm Anderson) hope these devotions will help you and your family connect with God and each other this Advent Season.

Peace- Day 3: True Strength

December 1, 2015

A peaceful person has developed certain negative connotations in our culture.   There are critics who seem to feel that pacificism means a person is weak or scared.  Now certainly there are people who flee fights out of fear or avoid conflict because they are intimidated.  But Godly peace, as explained in Psalm 29:11, “May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!” (NRSV), is synonymous with strength.

When is a time you saw “peace” used incorrectly?  When is a time you witnessed true peace?  What took strength in that moment?

Often times a weak person feels forced to use intimidation and conflict to try to gain control.  For instance the leaders who had Jesus arrested and killed.  While a person rooted in Godly strength is able to surrender their own self-interest for the greater good.  Think of Jesus who did not fight back and actually used his divine healing ability to mend the ear of his attacker.

How can you show peace in the face of day to day conflict?

Light the Candle of Peace and Pray:  “God strengthen us to be instruments of his peace.   Help us to be intentional about how we approach conflict and let us display Christ like humility no matter how challenging the situation.”
